Why It's Not Discrimination to Criminalize Gay Sex

Gay rights activists have been claiming that it is discriminatory to criminalize gay sex but:
1. Legalize
private, consensual anal and oral sex between heterosexual adults; and
2. Not criminalize lesbian sex.

I do have my reservations regarding heterosexual couples having oral and anal sex. However, it is fundamentally different from homosexual sex. The sexual union between a male and a female has the potential to be a holy union even though there are heterosexuals who are sexually transgressive. In contrast, a sexual relationship does not at all have the potential to be a proper, morally acceptable relationship. It is not because of oral and anal sex per se that gay sex should be criminalized. In the case of homosexuals, the nature of the sexual relationship (which I cannot even call a union) that is wrong and the very core of the gay person is corrupt. Gay sex is an indication of a persisting perversion of values. Therefore there is more reason to criminalize gay sex. Heterosexual sex may be transgressive at certain points, but the transgressive acts do not indicate any lingering perversion because heterosexuality if fundamentally normal. There may be some lapses of abnormality in heterosexual sex, but these are much more easily corrected. In short, the difference is one between sporadic transgressive acts and a wholly ransgressive being.

While I do not approve of transgressive acts and I urge all heterosexual couples that practice anal and oral sex to stop indulging in such acts, I find it all the more important to correct the homosexual being. This is what others have referred to as the homosexual "lifestyle." It is a lifestyle, a mode of existence, a character trait, because homosexuals do not just engage in acts of transgression. Even when they are not performing oral or anal sex, they are continually sinning. The very nature of their supposed desire is wrong. Until they make a conscious choice to change and succeed in doing so, there is no way they can put themselves into the road of the righteous. With appropriate punishments, we can help gays to stop their homosexual lifestyle and gradually change their beings. A physical punishment of caning (especially one that inflicts pain near the very orifice that once brought them much sinful pleasure) will remind them of the seriousness of their past actions and help to show that what is right. As such, contrary to claims that 377A is archaic, it is clear that 377A is very well thought out and relevant; if it is well-enforced, it will strengthen Singapore society, leading to a more blessed and pure nation.

If we compare gay sex between males to lesbian sex between women, we also see that gay sex is of a more transgressive nature. It is clear that unlike gays, lesbians do not have real penetrative sex with one another, at least not without the help of certain external devices. Without the oral or anal penetration of a phallic organ, the bodies of lesbians are not as defiled as those of gays. If lesbians do resort to the use of external devices, they would really be simulating heterosexual sex and we can tell that they are latently yearning for an authentic heterosexual union. While I do not wish to trivialize the transgressions of lesbians (for all sins are equally sinful), it is clear that they do not deserve as severe an admonition as gays deserve. On the other hand, gays are making use of their bodily endowments to indulge in penetrative sex, which is a trademark of heterosexual unions.

When gays claim that the law is discriminatory because gay sex is criminalized but not lesbian sex or heterosexual anal and oral sex, they are making the mistake of misjudging the severity of their wrongdoings and equating them with other actions. It also reflects the devil's impulse, which is to drag as many people down with them as possible. We know very well that not every immoral or sinful act can be made criminal in a secular state like Singapore. As such, only the most severely immoral acts are defined as criminal. It is like the difference between lying and fraud. We do not demand that the law punishes those who tell their friends lies or make up excuses for being late even though we know that it is extremely bad to do so. However, in cases of fraud, it is clear that the law has to step in to punish offenders because of the severity of their wrongdoings and to protect others in society from them. Given that the most obstinately misguided homosexuals out there are like the more dangerous criminals (they are more like fraudsters than the everyday liar) because the scale of their offense is greater, the law has to punish them. As for lesbians and heterosexual couples who engage in oral and anal sex, it is hoped that proper advice and pressure from members of the community will gradually rehabilitate them.

I do not wish to give the impression that I'm speaking from an elevated moral ground. In fact, all of us are equally susceptible to the penetration of sin. This is a dangerous world and we have to do all we can to protect ourselves, our households and our nation from the decay sin brings about. Today, my daughter brought home a male friend from school and I realized how vulnerable even the innocent young ones are. I saw them holding hands spontaneously. I had to remind them not to act impulsively and to pray before doing so to make sure that the source of their inspiration is right. But not long after, I saw again that the two of them were together in her room unaccompanied. While I'm not a control freak and I need not be around to supervise them, I had to remind the young ones that it was not proper for them to be alone in the same room even with the doors open. I had to advise my daughter to get one of her brothers to be in the room so that there is company. So you see, there is vulnerability everywhere and we have to be vigilant at all times. Set a proper example for the children and they will grow up to honor their community, society, country and religion.
